Creative freedom, play, chance and exploration are the important foundations of Jide Aje’s art practice. Drawing and painting typically form a foundation unto which color, collage, texture and other elements are layered.

Aje mines decorative motifs from his ancestral cultural legacies (West African, Yoruba, and Nigerian) to create new meanings under the premise that all culture is dynamic and ever changing. The uphill task for Aje is striving not to be stuck in a creative rut, therefore he attempts to start each new piece or series afresh yet using genetic material that has been accrued over time. Aje is always on the lookout for new materials and processes, new ways of using the existing and the old, yet seeking to be fresh and original.
